General

Do I need a permit for electrical work?

Many electrical jobs, such as panel replacements and new circuits, require a permit and inspection. We’ll tell you what your project needs and handle it.

Is my panel too small?

Frequent tripping, warm breakers or plans for an EV charger, generator or addition are common signs you may need more capacity. We can evaluate it on site.

Can you install an EV charger?

Yes. We check your panel capacity, run a dedicated circuit and install the charger.

Can you connect my generator?

Yes. We install transfer switches and generator connections, and Kelm Power Systems handles full standby generator installs.

What should I do if I smell burning or see sparks?

Turn off power at the breaker if it’s safe to do so, keep away from the area and call for help. If there is fire or immediate danger, call 911 first.

Panel Upgrades View page →

How long will my power be off?

Panel replacements require the power to be off while the work is done. We’ll tell you what to expect for your job and plan around it.

Do I need a bigger service or just a new panel?

It depends on your loads. Sometimes a new panel is enough; sometimes the service size has to increase. Your load evaluation answers that.

Will a panel upgrade help with a generator?

Often. A generator transfer switch needs space and correct configuration, and an upgrade is a good time to plan it.

Is a rusty panel dangerous?

Corrosion can damage connections and breakers. Coastal homes see it more often. Have it inspected.

Wiring & Rewiring View page →

Do I need to rewire my whole house?

Not always. Many older homes need targeted repairs rather than a full rewire. An evaluation tells you which.

Can you work around finished walls?

Often, yes, with careful routing. Some situations require openings that need patching afterward; we’ll explain beforehand.

Do you coordinate with other trades?

Yes. As part of Kelm Home Services, we coordinate with Kelm Plumbing and Kelm Construction on shared projects.

Will I need a permit?

Many wiring jobs require a permit. We’ll tell you what your project needs.

EV Chargers View page →

Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?

Not always. It depends on your current service and loads. A capacity check tells you.

Hardwired or plug-in?

Both can work. The charger’s instructions and your setup determine the right approach.

Can I install it outside?

Yes, with equipment rated for outdoor use and proper protection.

Will an EV charger work with my generator?

It can, but EV charging is a large load. We’ll talk through how it fits your generator setup.

Lighting View page →

Can I hang a ceiling fan where a light is now?

Often, yes, but the box must be rated for fan support. We check and replace it if needed.

Will recessed lights work in my ceiling?

Usually. We check framing, insulation and attic access to choose the right fixtures.

Do you install fixtures I buy?

Yes, as long as they’re suitable for the location. We’ll confirm before we install.

Is outdoor lighting affected by salt air?

Coastal exposure can corrode fixtures and connections faster. Choosing suitable equipment helps.

Generator Hookups View page →

Can you connect my portable generator?

Yes, through a properly installed transfer switch or interlock with an inlet.

Do you install standby generators?

Kelm Power Systems handles standby generator sales, installation, service and monitoring; Kelm Electric handles the electrical side as part of the family.

Troubleshooting & Repair View page →

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

Common causes include overloaded circuits, short circuits, ground faults and worn breakers. Testing tells which.

Can I reset a breaker that keeps tripping?

Resetting repeatedly can be unsafe. If it trips again right away, leave it off and call.

My outlets stopped working after a storm. Why?

It could be a tripped GFCI, a breaker or damage. If water was involved, have it inspected.

Do you do pre-sale repairs?

Yes, including corrections listed in a home inspection report.
